When did the disdain for northern pike ratchet up to put them down to a level with rough fish like carp and bullhead? It seems to me that every angler fishing bass, muskies or walleye can heap a boatload of venom into a story where they thought they had the biggest fill-in-the-blank-species of their life on, and it turned out to be a big disappointment – a 13-pound northern. |

It was tough to avoid rising waters this year. From television, to newspaper front pages, to lines of sandbaggers shoring up emergency dikes, the story has been the rapid onset of record-level waters on many of the region’s rivers. The work and clean-up that will follow with be long and arduous. It’s a good bet that by June, everyone along the shores of any river will be ready for some relaxation, and some fishing. |
